Three films that influenced me
影響我的三部電影
When I was a kid, I wasn’t interested in the cinema at all. I was crazy about the theatre, and I dreamed of going to see Shakespeare in Stratford. I wanted to be in the theatre; that was my only ambition.
當我還是個孩子的時候，我對電影一點都不感興趣。我對戲劇很著迷，我夢想去斯特拉特福德看莎士比亞。我想待在劇院里;這是我唯一的抱負。
I saw the classic Italian film Bicycle Thieves in the late 1950s, when I was in my late teens. At that time, I had left school and was heading towards an unsuccessful career as an actor and theatre director. The film had a big effect on me. It made me realise that cinema could be about ordinary people and their everyday dilemmas rather than just stars, riches, or silly adventures. I began to see cinema in another light beyond the usual Hollywood nonsense.
