Miss Liu wanted to encourage her students to read famous books, so she showed them this humorous story from a novel called 'The adventures of Tom Sawyer' by Mark Twain.
劉老師想鼓勵她的學生們多閱讀名著名篇，于是她向他們展示了這個取自馬克·吐溫一本叫《Tom Sawyer（湯姆·索亞）歷險記》的小說里的幽默故事。

Tom Sawyer 刷圍欄
On Saturday morning, every boy in town was happy, except Tom sawyer.
上周六的上午，鎮子里的每一個男孩都很高興，Tom Sawyer 除外。
Tom's aunt gave him a task of to paint their fence. It was 30 yards long and three yards high.
Tom 的姨媽交待給他了一個任務，給他們的圍欄刷油漆。這圍欄有30 碼長 3 碼高！
He painted one board and surveyed his progress, and then he sat down to have a rest.
他刷完了一面后，檢視了下進度，然后他坐下休息會兒。
Tom began to think of the games that he wanted to play.
Tom 開始掂記著想要玩的種種游戲。
He knew the boys who were free would soon come along and make fun of him.
他知道那些無所事事的男孩子很快就會跑過來譏笑他。
Just then, he had an idea. He picked up his brush and went back to work.
就在這時，他有了一個主意。他撿起刷子，回去（繼續）工作。
Ben Rogers came along the road. He was singing happily and carrying an apple.
Ben Rogers 沿路跑來了，他愉快地唱著歌，還拿著一個蘋果。
“I'm going swimming,” said Ben. “Do you want to come? Oh, you have to work, don't you? What a pity!”
“我要去游泳，” Ben 說，“你要（一起）來嗎？哦，你不得不干活是吧？真是可惜。”
“Work?” said Tom. “This isn't work. I'm enjoying myself. Does a boy get a chance to paint a fence like this every day?” Then he went on painting.
“干活？”Tom 說，“這不是干活，我正自個兒享受呢，哪個男孩能天天有機會像這樣刷圍欄呢？”說完，他繼續刷他的油漆。
Ben watched Tom in silence. He became more and more interested.
Ben 靜靜地注視著 Tom，他越來越感到有興趣了。
After a while, he said, “Tom, will you let me do some painting?”
過了一會兒，他說：“Tom，你能讓我刷一些嗎？”
Tom said, “No, Ben, I can't. Aunt Polly wants me to do it well, I'm the only person that can do it right.”
Tom 說：“不行，Ben，我不能讓你來刷。Polly 姨媽讓我把這活兒干好，我是唯一可以把它做好的人。”
“Oh, please, Tom,” said Ben. “I can do it. I'll be really careful. I'll give you half my apple. Wait, I'll give you all of it.”
“哦，拜托，Tom，” Ben 說。 “我會刷的，我會非常小心。我把我的一半蘋果給你，等下，我把它全給你！”
“That's a deal,” said Tom. “But you must be careful.”
“這倒是個問題，”Tom 說，“可是你一定要小心。”
Tom gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. He sat down again and started to eat the apple.
Tom 把刷子遞給 Ben，臉上掛著擔心，但心里暗喜著。他再次坐了下來，開始吃那蘋果。
When Ben got tired, Billy Fisher was waiting. He gave Tom a kite for the chance to paint.
當 Ben 刷累了，Billy Fisher 正在等著。他給了 Tom 一個風箏來交換刷油漆的機會。
Then Johnny Miller offered him two toy soldiers.
然后是 Johnny Miller，他給 Tom 獻上了他的兩個玩具兵。
Soon Tom had got many new toys, and the fence got three coats of paint.
沒過多久，Tom 就得到了很多新玩具，并且圍欄被整整刷了 3 遍。
Aunt Polly was so pleased that she gave Tom a big apple!
Polly 姨媽很是高興，她（獎）給了 Tom 一個大蘋果！
