本句的主干是He hoped...。his work at the university...flourished為省略that的賓語從句，其中疑問詞how引導(dǎo)的賓語從句作介詞into的賓語；where引導(dǎo)的定語從句修飾places。
give sb. insight into意為"使人洞悉，使人了解"。如：
The book gives me an insight into American literature.
這本書使我對美國文學(xué)有了深入的了解。

英語中，常出現(xiàn)類似how引導(dǎo)的特殊疑問句變賓語從句的情況，在使用時需要注意以下情況。
在引導(dǎo)詞上，要將疑問代詞或疑問副詞變?yōu)檫B接代詞或連接副詞，引導(dǎo)賓語從句。如：
Whose bike is this? Does anybody know? Does anybody know whose bike this is?
When will the train arrive? He asked me.-He asked me when the train would arrive.
Which one do you like best? She asked me.-She asked me which one I liked best．
注意：疑問句中主語之前的助動詞若是do/does/did，變?yōu)橘e語從句時，要先將助動詞去掉，謂語動詞再根據(jù)時態(tài)作相應(yīng)的變化。
Who can answer the question? The teacher asked.一The teacher asked who could answer the question.
如主句為陳述句、祈使句，句末就用句號；如主句是疑問句，句末就用問號。如：
I don't know when we shall start tomorrow.
Do you know when we shall start tomorrow?
