我們要尋找的并不是自己認為最合適的詞，而是作者當時寫文章時所認為最能表達其寫作思路的詞。
　　當然，我們并不是作者，對于他的用詞是基于猜測，但也正因為如此，為了避免出現相近的、模棱兩可的答案，出題者在決定哪些詞用來填空的時候（除了考察語法、詞義和邏輯關系的詞匯外），必然會抽取一些在上下文中與其它內容、詞匯相呼應的詞，以便達到有理可據。
　　下面，筆者以新鮮出爐的大學英語四級完形填空中，一篇講述母嬰關聯影響人們冒險決策的文章為例，講解怎樣利用上面的理解，運籌帷幄，攻克難題！

　　首先，在通讀全文之后掌握作者的大致思路，第一段首句以母嬰強烈情感維系增強兒童探險意愿為開頭，道出了從母親身上所得的安全感與孩子探險意愿之間的正比例關系，第三句的now和continue將這一理論繼續延展至后述的實驗和成人。
　　后面兩段通過兩個不同的實驗展示了女性對于喚起成人安全感，繼而令他們更加愿意嘗試冒險的測試結果。而67-86題之中的許多處填詞都是可以在文中找出相對應的內容的，如果所選詞匯出現在同一句子中，則常常前后呼應。以此展示作者本人在寫作中前后統一關聯的思路。
　　如67題， 67 the animal kingdom, in people, monkeys and even spiders. 從選項中也能看出此處選填一個介詞，而答案就在后面的in people, monkeys and even spiders, 通過閱讀后面得知前面的animal kingdom實為總起范圍，講述這樣的現象遍及整個動物王國，包括人類、猴子甚至是蜘蛛，因此選擇原意為橫穿，穿過，在此處引申至橫跨、遍及含義的across。
　　68題，The more secure we are in our 68 to Mom，該空的選詞其實是與首句的bond相呼應，在我們與母親的聯系中，我們覺得越安全，便越是可能嘗試新鮮事物和冒險。attachment和bond都在講述一種聯系、維系。
　　69、70題，A 69 reminder of Mom's touch or the sound of her voice on the phone is 70 to change people's minds and moods. 兩處填空在同一個句子中用詞前后呼應，70題的enough較易看出，表達這樣的觸動足夠改變人們的思想情緒，而前面正是用mere 僅僅的與enough 呼應，僅僅小小的觸動便足夠。
　　74題 In half the cases, the experimenters patted the students 74 on the back of the shoulder. 這一題的選擇應為lightly, 在最后一段末句的gentle shoulder pats處得到了印證，后面的gentle實為前面lightly的近義替換，當然修飾不同對象時使用了不同的詞性。
　　80、82題，To further 80 that a woman's touch links feelings of security 81 risk taking, the researchers asked a 82 group of undergraduates to make financial decisions after a writing exercise. 80題的各個選項中，consent 為允許、準許，較易排除，enable后一般要跟使其能夠怎樣的對象，因此也排除，在科學實驗的探索中，不應當是確保、擔保某事必然會發生，而是去努力證實某理論是成立的，因此舍棄ensure使用confirm, 而這里的confirm也就決定了后面是要使用a different group of students來進一步證實該理論在不同受測試者身上均成立。
　　相信上述的分析已解答了部分考生的疑惑。在今后的考試中，如能清醒的認識到，所選擇的詞應該是表達作者本意的詞，有意識的將前后句子、段落看成相互關聯的整體，學會在文中尋找答案，讓詞匯前后呼應，表達統一主題，那么，許多難以抉擇的選項就變得容易了。
　　然而，在看了網上五花八門的網友答案之后，筆者也見到一些其實很簡單，卻有許多人出錯的選項。因為自己教授英語新概念多年，一眼便識有不少是出自課文原句的用法，因此選得輕松得意，在此寫出與讀者分享。
　　75題 In half the cases, the experimenters patted the students 74 on the back of the shoulder for about one second 75 providing verbal instructions about the study. 后面部分的providing ...其實是作為主語支線動作的分詞狀語，表達在進行口頭說明的同時，輕拍學生的肩膀。在新概念二冊課文中，上述將while重新添上，更明確表意的用法比比皆是，如第45課中出現的Sam Benton, the local butcher, had lost his wallet while taking his savings to the post office. 73課， while playing truant， 講述一個傳奇的逃學學生的經歷，等等。
　　76題，Both male and female students who were touched by a female experimenter were 76 more likely to choose the risky alternative 77 were those who had not been touched or were patted by male experimenters. far 修飾形容詞比較級，與more一起出現的情況，在新概念二冊第35課《捉賊》中亦有例證： He is finding his new work far more exciting.
　　83題，whereas the 83 half wrote about feeling insecure and alone. the other 表述兩者中的另一個在新概念二冊的第5課，講述飛鴿傳書的課文中就已出現：from one garage to the other...
　　84題 a 84 of insecurity 安全感，則對應新概念二冊第63課中所出現的常見幽默感的表述 sense of humour。
　　若是考生們在平時能多閱讀、學習一些地道的文章、教材，這一類基本語法知識和常用表達也能駕輕就熟了。
