Voice 1: Recently, the former President of the United States, Bill Clinton, was visiting a meeting of the British Labour party, the ruling political group.

He told the Labour party:“Society and community are important because of ubuntu.”
他告訴工黨：“因為‘ubuntu’，社會和社區很重要。”

Voice 2: The word ubuntu comes from Africa.
聲音2：“ubuntu”這個詞源于非洲。
It is part of the Bantu language spoken in southern Africa.
它是非洲南部班圖語的一部分。
And it is connected to an idea from the Zulu tribe.
它與祖魯部落的一個想法有關。
The Zulu people say “umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu.”
祖魯人說:“umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu”。
Voice 1: That is a mouthful!

Voice 2: Yes, it is! But umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu has a very important meaning.
聲音2：是的，就是這樣！但是“umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu”卻有著非常重要的意義。
It means that a person is only a person through their relationship with other people.
這意味著一個人只有在與他人的關系中才是真正的人。
Or, a person could not exist without relations with other people.
或者，一個人如果沒有與他人的關系就不可能存在。
The word ubuntu comes from that Zulu idea. It means, “I am because you are.”
“ubuntu”這個詞來源于祖魯人的想法。意思是，“因為你是，所以我是。”
Voice 1: African leader Desmond Tutu once said.

“Ubuntu is very difficult to translate into a Western language.
“‘Ubuntu’是很難被翻譯成西方語言的。
But, it is to say, ‘My humanity is caught up with your humanity, my humanity is bound or is connected to yours.”

Tutu’s definition explains that there is a common bond between people.

It is like people’s lives are tied together.

Their lives are connected. It is a difficult idea.

But, it is still an important idea for everyone.
