The boy awoke before dawn. It had been eleven months and nine days since he had first set foot on the African continent.
圣地亞哥在日出前醒來。從他第一次踏上非洲大陸算起，已經(jīng)過去了十一個(gè)月零九天。
He dressed in his Arabian clothing of white linen, bought especially for this day.
男孩穿上白亞麻布的阿拉伯服裝，這是他特意為這一天準(zhǔn)備的。
He put his headcloth in place and secured it with a ring made of camel skin. Wearing his new sandals, he descended the stairs silently.
他在頭上包了塊頭巾，用駱駝皮做的頭箍固定住，穿上一雙新涼鞋，悄悄地走下樓梯。
The city was still sleeping. He prepared himself a sandwich and drank some hot tea from a crystal glass. Then he sat in the sun-filled doorway, smoking the hookah.
城市仍在沉睡中。他做了一份芝麻三明治，喝了杯用水晶杯盛著的熱茶，隨后便坐在門檻上，一個(gè)人吸起水煙來。
He smoked in silence, thinking of nothing, and listening to the sound of the wind that brought the scent of the desert.
他默默地吸著，什么都不想，只是傾聽著那持續(xù)不斷的風(fēng)聲。那風(fēng)帶來了沙漠的氣息。
When he had finished his smoke, he reached into one of his pockets, and sat there for a few moments, regarding what he had withdrawn.
抽完煙之后，他把手伸進(jìn)衣服的一個(gè)口袋里，然后端詳了一會(huì)兒從兜里掏出來的東西。
It was a bundle of money. Enough to buy himself a hundred and twenty sheep, a return ticket, and a license to import products from Africa into his own country.
那是厚厚的一沓錢，足夠用來買上一百二十只羊、一張回家的船票和一張貿(mào)易許可證。有了許可證，他就能往來于西班牙和摩洛哥做生意。
He waited patiently for the merchant to awaken and open the shop.
他耐心地等到店主醒來，開門營業(yè)。
Then the two went off to have some more tea.
兩個(gè)人又一起喝了點(diǎn)茶。
"I'm leaving today," said the boy. "I have the money I need to buy my sheep. And you have the money you need to go to Mecca."
“今天我就走了?！蹦泻⒄f，“我有了買羊的錢，您也有了去麥加的錢。”
The old man said nothing.
店主沒吭聲。
"Will you give me your blessing?" asked the boy. "You have helped me."
“請您祝福我。”男孩又說，“您曾經(jīng)幫助過我?！?/div>
The man continued to prepare his tea, saying nothing. Then he turned to the boy.
老板仍舊一言不發(fā)，默默地沏著茶。過了一會(huì)兒，他轉(zhuǎn)過身來，面對男孩。
"I am proud of you," he said. "You brought a new feeling into my crystal shop. But you know that I'm not going to go to Mecca. Just as you know that you're not going to buy your sheep."
“我為你感到驕傲?！彼f，“你為我的水晶店帶來了生機(jī)。但是你知道，我不會(huì)去麥加，就像你知道自己不會(huì)回去買羊一樣?！?/div>
"Who told you that?" asked the boy, startled.
“這是誰告訴您的？”男孩驚訝地問。
"Maktub," said the old crystal merchant.
“馬克圖布?！彼У昀习宓坏卣f。
And he gave the boy his blessing.
他祝福了男孩。
