An underdog would basically be someone who is at a disadvantage in a given situation.

Alicia mentions “Single mothers waiting on a check to come" in her song, as she grew up with her single mother in a poor section of New York City's Manhattan borough. In the song, she talks about how she refused to let her circumstances prevent her from achieving her goals.

They said I would never make it

But I was built to break the mold

The only dream that I've been chasing is my own

We've all been in that place where we have to overcome adversity. My life is different from yours, and your life is different from hers. Everybody has a different experience. But even when it feels like everything is at its worst, there are these challenges that we can overcome—we can figure it out and we can have the tenacity to fight the way through it. That's what “Underdog" is about.

我們都經歷過必須克服逆境的時刻。我的生活和你的不同，你的生活也和她的不同。每個人都有不同的經歷。但是這種能力讓我們知道，即使感覺一切都是最糟糕的，我們仍然可以克服這些挑戰——我們可以解決它，我們可以有毅力克服它。這就是《Underdog》的意義所在。

We're surrounded by all this other energy that makes you confused and makes you doubtful. You feel frustrated and it makes you just want to curl up in a corner. These feelings are all valid. But to remember that we are meant to defy the odds.
