Jingjing: Mark, how's your summer going?
京晶：馬克，夏天過(guò)得怎樣？
Mark: It's keeping me busy. So, I can't complain.
馬克：一直在忙。所以我沒(méi)什么可抱怨的。
Jingjing: That's good to hear.
京晶：這是好事啊。
Mark: I can't say the same for my friend, Fred, though. Fred's my former student, and he's doing an internship these days.

Jingjing: That sounds alright. Is Fred still an undergraduate?

Mark: Yeah, next year will be his third. He's hoping to do two internships before graduation.

Jingjing: Fred sounds like a go-getter. So, what's the matter?

Mark: At his internship, they have him doing a bunch of paperwork and filing. It's not what he had in mind when he thought about getting work experience.

Jingjing: That doesn't sound bad at all. It reminds me of what Andrew Carnegie said about the road to success.

Mark: Oh, I had to memorize that! It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself.

Jingjing: Exactly! So, pushing papers isn't so bad. It's better than sweeping, at any rate. And I bet it gives him time and perspective on business culture.

Mark: I'll have to tell Fred you said that. What other pearls of wisdom should I pass along?

Jingjing: He should use the internship as a chance to do networking.

Jingjing: Well, Fred should make friends with the other interns, and the people at that company. They could all help him when it comes to his next internship and job hunting down the road.

Mark: I agree. I've known lots of interns who were super shy. Fred's a pretty outgoing guy, though. He shouldn't have any problem with networking, once he knows how necessary it is.

Mark: What's that?

Jingjing: Fred should befriend the department manager, and get a letter of recommendation from that manager.

Mark: Right. That'd be a good reference.

Jingjing: Mark, have you heard any more from Fred these past few days?

Mark: Yes. He was afraid to go over his supervisor's head about the letter of recommendation. So, his supervisor wrote it. But then his supervisor told him he'll be quitting in a few weeks. So, the department manager signed his letter of recommendation.
馬克：有的。他不敢越級(jí)去找部門(mén)經(jīng)理要推薦信。所以他的主管寫(xiě)了這封信。但之后他的主管又告訴他幾周后就要辭職了。所以，最后還是部門(mén)經(jīng)理在他的推薦信上簽了名。
Jingjing: Wow, that's a long story with a simple ending.
京晶：哇哦，過(guò)程曲折，結(jié)局簡(jiǎn)單。
Mark: Yeah, he took your advice indirectly.
馬克：是的，他還是間接接受了你的建議。
Jingjing: Hey, you never told me the name of the company where Fred is doing his internship.

Mark: Oh, it's a start-up called Lazy Fresh. You've probably not heard of it.

Jingjing: Wow, that's the worst of both worlds: he has to do grunt work and can't put a major name on his résume.
