Once upon a time, at the age of 24, I was a student at St. John's Medical College in Bangalore.

I was a guest student during one month of a public health course. And that changed my mindset forever.
當(dāng)時(shí)，我是一名為期一個(gè)月的公共衛(wèi)生課程的旁聽(tīng)生。我的思維模式從那時(shí)起開(kāi)始改變。
The course was good, but it was not the course content in itself that changed the mindset.

It was the brutal realization, the first morning, that the Indian students were better than me.
而是因在第一天早晨，我發(fā)現(xiàn)印度學(xué)生的表現(xiàn)居然比我還要優(yōu)秀，這個(gè)殘酷的現(xiàn)實(shí)。
You see, I was a study nerd. I loved statistics from a young age. And I studied very much in Sweden.
如你所見(jiàn)，我是一個(gè)書(shū)呆子。當(dāng)我年輕時(shí)，我對(duì)數(shù)據(jù)有狂熱的喜好。而且我在瑞典學(xué)習(xí)時(shí)很用功。
I used to be in the upper quarter of all courses I attended. But in St. John's, I was in the lower quarter.
我曾在所有課程中都名列前茅。但在圣約翰時(shí)，我卻名落孫山了。
And the fact was that Indian students studied harder than we did in Sweden.
我不得不承認(rèn)，印度學(xué)生比瑞典學(xué)生要刻苦努力多了。
They read the textbook twice, or three times or four times. In Sweden we read it once and then we went partying.
他們會(huì)三番四次地閱讀他們的課本。而在瑞典，讀完一次后，我們就去夜夜笙歌了。
And that, to me, that personal experience was the first time in my life that the mindset I grew up with was changed.
這對(duì)于我的意義是在于，我生而知之的思維方式第一次被改變了。
And I realized that perhaps the Western world will not continue to dominate the world forever.
我意識(shí)到西方世界或許不再是霸權(quán)國(guó)家了。
And I think many of you have the same sort of personal experience.
我想你們都大概有這種體驗(yàn)。
It's that realization of someone you meet that really made you change your ideas about the world. It's not the statistics, although I tried to make it funny.
那種遇到某個(gè)人使你的世界觀發(fā)生天翻地覆地改變的經(jīng)歷。這些都不是數(shù)據(jù)，雖然我試著讓它聽(tīng)起來(lái)有趣。
