The Guardian Adopts Stronger Language for Environmental Issues

The Guardian, a prominent British daily newspaper, is encouraging its reporters to use stronger language to describe environmental issues. The Guardian’s in-house style guide now recommends using “climate crisis” or “climate emergency” over “climate change”. It also recommends using “global heating” instead of “global warming”. Katharine Viner, the Guardian’s editor-in-chief, stressed that the newspaper is committed to using language that is “scientifically precise”. In a related report about the US this week, the Guardian noted that “Democrats rated global heating as the third most important issue on their list, while Republican voters ranked it last.”
