It is one of my faults, that though my tongue is sometimes prompt enough at an answer,
我有一個(gè)缺陷，那就是盡管我口齒伶俐，對(duì)答如流，
there are times when it sadly fails me in framing an excuse;
但需要尋找藉口的時(shí)候卻往往一籌莫展；
and always the lapse occurs at some crisis, when a facile word or plausible pretext is specially wanted to get me out of painful embarrassment.
因此某些關(guān)鍵時(shí)刻，需要隨口一句話，或者站得住腳的遁詞來(lái)擺脫痛苦的窘境時(shí)，我便常常會(huì)出差錯(cuò)。
I did not like to walk at this hour alone with Mr. Rochester in the shadowy orchard;
我不愿在這個(gè)時(shí)候單獨(dú)同羅切斯特先生漫步在陰影籠罩的果園里；
but I could not find a reason to allege for leaving him.
但是我又找不出一個(gè)脫身的理由。
I followed with lagging step, and thoughts busily bent on discovering a means of extrication;
我慢吞吞地跟在后頭，一面在拼命動(dòng)腦筋設(shè)法擺脫；
but he himself looked so composed and so grave also, I became ashamed of feeling any confusion:

the evil -- if evil existent or prospective there was -- seemed to lie with me only; his mind was unconscious and quiet.
如果說(shuō)心中有鬼--不管是現(xiàn)在還是將來(lái)--那只能說(shuō)我有；他心里十分平靜，而且全然不覺(jué)。
"Jane," he recommenced, as we entered the laurel walk,
