Sleep when the wind blows
狂風(fēng)大作，我仍安睡

How do you handle adversity? What are you thinking when the sun goes down on those cold, windy nights, when you're trying to get to sleep, and the wind keeps swirling and howling through your bedroom windows?
你如何應(yīng)對逆境？當(dāng)太陽落山，寒冷且狂風(fēng)大作的夜晚來臨時；你正打算入睡，大風(fēng)卻窗外席卷咆哮，你還能安心入睡嗎？
Years ago a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the Atlantic, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops.
多年前，有一位農(nóng)場主擁有大西洋沿岸的一片土地。他不斷地打廣告招聘農(nóng)場工人。大多數(shù)人都不愿意在大西洋沿岸的農(nóng)場工作。他們懼怕那掠過大西洋，會對建筑和農(nóng)作物造成嚴(yán)重破壞的可怕風(fēng)暴。
As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals. Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer.
不斷有應(yīng)聘者前來面試，但一直沒人愿意留下來接受這份工作。最終，一位應(yīng)聘者來到了農(nóng)場主面前，他是一位身材瘦小，年過中年的男子。
"Are you a good farm hand?" the farmer asked him. "Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered the little man. Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work. Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore.
“你會成為一名優(yōu)秀的農(nóng)場工人嗎？”農(nóng)場主問他。“會的。當(dāng)窗外狂風(fēng)呼嘯時，我仍能睡得安穩(wěn)。”小個子男子回答道。雖然對這樣的回答感到困惑，但農(nóng)場主尋求幫手的心情急切，隨即雇傭了他。此后，這位小個子男子在農(nóng)場工作得非常好，每天都會從黎明忙到黃昏，農(nóng)場主對他的工作很是滿意。直到一天晚上，一陣狂風(fēng)從海上咆哮而來。
Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, "Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!"
農(nóng)場主從床上跳下來，抓起一盞提燈，沖向隔壁那個小個子男子的睡房。他一邊搖動著小個子男子的身體，一邊大聲喊道：“快起來！風(fēng)暴就要來啦！趕快用繩子把農(nóng)場里的東西捆起來，不然大風(fēng)會把它們吹跑的！”
The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, "No sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows." Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot.
小個子男子在床上翻過身來，堅定地說：“不用去，先生。我告訴過您，當(dāng)窗外狂風(fēng)呼嘯時，我仍能睡得安穩(wěn)。”農(nóng)場主被這一回答激怒了，禁不住要當(dāng)場將他辭退。
Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away.
但，他還是匆忙跑到外面，先準(zhǔn)備迎接風(fēng)暴的到來。令他驚訝的是，他發(fā)現(xiàn)所有的干草堆都蓋上了防水油布。奶牛已在畜棚里，雞已在雞籠內(nèi)，門上已釘好了木條。百葉窗已被牢牢固定。所有該捆綁的東西都已捆綁好了。任何東西都不會被大風(fēng)吹跑。
The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew. Can you sleep when the wind blows? When you're prepared, spiritually, mentally, and physically, you have nothing to fear.
此時此刻，農(nóng)場主終于明白了那個小個子男子的意思。于是，他回到自己的床上，像小個子男子一樣安穩(wěn)地入睡了，任憑窗外狂風(fēng)肆虐。當(dāng)窗外狂風(fēng)呼嘯時，你是否能睡得安穩(wěn)？任何境況下，只要你的身心已做好充分的準(zhǔn)備，你就是無所畏懼的。

Father's words
父親的話

His father's constant 'nagging' was annoying him to his wits end every single day; "You are leaving the room without switching off the light”, "The TV is on in the room where there is no one. Switch it off!” etc. etc...
父親不停的“嘮叨”令他不厭其煩——“你離開房間時怎么不關(guān)燈”；“屋里沒人，電視機(jī)怎么還開著。關(guān)掉它！”等等等等......
Today, he had a job interview. "As soon as I get the job, I'll leave this town and become free from the nagging from my father" he thought.
今天，他要去參加一個求職面試。“只要我得到那份工作，我就離開這個城鎮(zhèn)，擺脫我父親的嘮叨。”他這樣想著。
On both sides of the lane to the interview office, he could see beautiful flowers. The gardener however, had kept the water running in the hose-pipe and was not to be seen anywhere. The water was overflowing on the lane. He lifted the hosepipe and placed it near one of the plants and went further.
在通往面試室的小路兩側(cè)，他看到了許多美麗的花朵。澆花的水管隨意放置著，水不斷地從水管中流出，而且到處不見園丁的蹤影。水已經(jīng)漫上了小路。他撿起水管，將其放在其中一株花卉旁，然后繼續(xù)朝面試室走去。
When he arrived at the office where the interview would be held, he noticed that the door was open and that the latch was protruding out, probably hitting people when they were entering. He put the latch back properly, closed the door and entered the office.
到達(dá)面試室大樓門口時，他注意到門是打開的，門閂向外伸出，有人進(jìn)入時可能會碰到。他將門閂放回正確的位置，關(guān)上門，然后走進(jìn)了面試室大樓。
On his way upstairs to the room where the interview would be held, he noticed that the lights on the stairway were burning, even though there was plenty of daylight. He remembered his father's admonition, "Switch it off!" automatically, he switched off the light.
在通往樓上面試室的樓梯走廊上，他注意到，盡管這里陽光充足，照明燈卻是打開的。他記起了父親的告誡：“把它關(guān)掉！”。然后，他就不由自主地把燈關(guān)了。
He entered the hall with some trepidation and stepped on the "Welcome" mat placed near the door. He noticed that the mat was upside down. Irritated, and remembering his dad's voice again, he straightened out the mat.
他有些誠惶誠恐地走入了面試大廳，腳踩在了門旁的門氈上。他注意到門氈放顛倒了。這一狀況刺激到了他的神經(jīng)，耳邊再次響起了父親的聲音，于是他俯身把門氈?jǐn)[正了。
When it was his turn to be interviewed, he nervously stood before the interviewer.
輪到他接受面試時，他緊張地站在面試官面前。
The officer took the certificates from him and without looking at them asked: "When can you start to work?" He thought; "is this a trick question, or is this a signal that I have been offered the job?" He was confused.
面試官接過了他的各種證書，看都沒看一眼，便問道：“你什么時候能來上班？”他心想：“這問題會不會有什么陷阱，還是這意味著我已經(jīng)得到了這份工作？”他被搞糊涂了。
The boss explained: "We didn't ask anyone any question here. By asking a few questions we won't be able to assess the attitude of each applicant anyway. So we observed everyone through cameras in the building. No one who came today did anything to set right the latch at the door, the hose pipe, the welcome mat, or switched off the lights. You were the only one who did that. That's why we have decided to select you for the job."
老板解釋說：“我們的面試不問應(yīng)聘者任何問題。總之，我們無法通過問幾個問題，就對應(yīng)聘者的做事態(tài)度做出評價。所以我們會通過建筑物中的攝像頭觀察每個應(yīng)聘者。今天來應(yīng)聘的人，除了你以外，沒有一個把門閂、水管、門氈重新放好，把燈關(guān)掉的。你是唯一一個做到的。這就是我們決定錄用你的原因。”
