He said that self-esteem is equal to our success over pretensions. In other words, our achievement...

how much we succeed, how much we achieve over what we pretend or what we aspire to, what our goals are.

In other words, if we have high expectations, high pretensions, we are much more likely to hurt our self-esteem.

For example, let's say my aspiration, my pretension, my expectation is to make 4 thousand dollars a month.
