Dialogue 1

Mark visits Jingjing at her office.
馬克去京晶的辦公室找她。
Mark: How's it hanging, Jingjing? Is that cat food on your desk?
馬克：最近怎么樣，京晶？你桌上放的是貓糧嗎？
Jingjing: It sure is. I'm getting it ready in individual portions.
京晶：當(dāng)然是了。我都把它們按單份準(zhǔn)備好了。
Mark: Let me guess: you feed the cats that live freely in your community.
馬克：讓我猜猜：你喂那些自由生活在你們小區(qū)的貓咪。
Jingjing: You got it. When I come home from work, they recognize me and crowd around.
京晶：對了。當(dāng)我下班回家，它們認(rèn)出我后就全部圍過來了。
Mark: So, it's best to have the food ready, right?
馬克：所以，最好是把食物都準(zhǔn)備好，對嗎？
Jingjing: Exactly. Individual portions are better, so that the cats can start eating right away, without struggling to get food.
京晶：非常正確。單份分裝好特別好，這樣的話，貓咪們就可以直接開始吃，不用費勁爭搶。
Mark: Do you they also hunt mice and rats?
馬克：你覺得它們也捉老鼠嗎？
Jingjing: I don't know that there are so many rodents in my community. I haven't seen any.

Jingjing: I don't hear any, because my apartment is on a high floor.

Mark: I used to live in a first floor apartment, and had to bear the noise they were making just outside my window.
馬克：我過去住在一個公寓的一層，不得不忍受它們在我窗外發(fā)出的干擾的聲音。
Jingjing: Did it keep you up?
京晶：那會讓你睡不著嗎？
Mark: Only until I threw some water out the window. Then they went away, and I could sleep.
馬克：除非直到我向窗外潑了一些水出去，它們才走開，然后我就可以睡覺了。
Jingjing: You meanie!
京晶：你這個刻薄的人！
Mark: Well, I'm usually nice to cats. Tell me more about the cats in your care next time I see you.
馬克：那什么，我通常對貓咪挺友好的。下次我見你的時候你再給我講講你照顧的那些貓貓。
Jingjing: Count on it.

Mark: Déjà vu: getting the cats' dinner ready again?
馬克：這情景似曾相識啊！又在給貓貓們準(zhǔn)備晚飯了嗎
Jingjing: Yeah. I don't do this every day, though—just once or twice a week.
京晶：是啊，我也不是每天都這么做，一周就一到兩次吧。
Mark: So, our feline friends have to go hungry or hunt the other days?
馬克：所以我們的貓咪朋友們其他日子里就不得不餓著肚子或者自己去獵食了？
Jingjing: No no no. There's a group of retirees in my community. They do most of the work. I just take care of it sometimes to reduce their burden.
京晶：并不并不并不。我們小區(qū)還有一群退休人士，主要是她們在負責(zé)照顧，我只是有時候幫忙照顧它們以減輕她們的負擔(dān)。
Mark: I admire you for it.

Jingjing: Say, would you be open to adopting a cat?

Mark: Umm, I've had house cats before and was glad I did. But, right now, I can't take in a pet.

Jingjing: That's too bad. Look at this cute cat.
京晶：那真不妙，你看這只可愛的小貓
Mark: That's a great picture. Who's taking care of it right now?
馬克：圖片真棒。現(xiàn)在誰在照顧它？
Jingjing: Someone in my community rescues cats that were injured. This one had a broken leg and just needed to recover for a few weeks.
京晶：我們小區(qū)里有人救那些受傷的貓咪，這一只斷了一條腿，需要幾周時間恢復(fù)。
Mark: What'll happen if no one adopts it.
馬克：如果沒有人領(lǐng)養(yǎng)它們會怎么辦呢？
Jingjing: It'll probably just get released back into the community yard.

Mark: Hopefully it'll find a good home. Winter's coming.

Jingjing: Yeah, that's why I showed you the picture. Let me know if you change your mind.
