The library looked tranquil enough as I entered it, and the Sibyl — if Sibyl she were
我進(jìn)門(mén)的時(shí)候，圖書(shū)室顯得很安靜，那女巫--如果她確實(shí)是的話，
was seated snugly enough in an easy-chair at the chimney-corner.
舒適地坐在煙囪角落的安樂(lè)椅上。
She had on a red cloak and a black bonnet, or rather, a broad-brimmed gipsy hat, tied down with a striped handkerchief under her chin.
她身披紅色斗篷，頭戴一頂黑色女帽，或者不如說(shuō)寬邊吉卜賽帽，用一塊條子手帕系到了下巴上。
An extinguished candle stood on the table.
桌子上立著一根熄滅了的蠟燭。
She was bending over the fire, and seemed reading in a little black book, like a prayer-book, by the light of the blaze.
她俯身向著火爐，借著火光，似乎在讀一本祈禱書(shū)般的黑色小書(shū)。
She muttered the words to herself, as most old women do, while she read.
一面讀，一面象大多數(shù)老婦人那樣，口中念念有詞。
She did not desist immediately on my entrance. It appeared she wished to finish a paragraph.
我進(jìn)門(mén)時(shí)她并沒(méi)有立即放下書(shū)來(lái)。似乎想把一段讀完。
I stood on the rug and warmed my hands, which were rather cold with sitting at a distance from the drawing-room fire.
我站在地毯上，暖了暖冰冷的手，因?yàn)樵诳蛷d時(shí)我坐得離火爐較遠(yuǎn)。
I felt now as composed as ever I did in my life.
這時(shí)我像往常那么平靜。
There was nothing indeed in the gipsy's appearance to trouble one 's calm.
說(shuō)實(shí)在吉卜賽人的外表沒(méi)有什么會(huì)使我感到不安。
She shut her book and slowly looked up.
她合上書(shū)，慢慢抬起頭來(lái)。
Her hat-brim partially shaded her face, yet I could see, as she raised it, that it was a strange one.
帽沿遮住了臉的一部份。但是她揚(yáng)起頭來(lái)時(shí)，我們能看清楚她的面容很古怪。
It looked all brown and black; elf-locks bristled out from beneath a white band which passed under her chin,
棕黑色的頭發(fā)，亂發(fā)從繞過(guò)下巴的白色帶子下鉆了出來(lái)，
and came half over her cheeks, or rather jaws.
漫過(guò)半個(gè)臉頰，或者不如說(shuō)下顎。
Her eye confronted me at once, with a bold and direct gaze.
她的目光立即與我的相遇，大膽地直視著我。
"Well, and you want your fortune told?" she said, in a voice as decided as her glance, as harsh as her features.
"噢，你想要算命嗎？"她說(shuō)，那口氣像她的目光那樣堅(jiān)定，像她的五官那樣嚴(yán)厲。
I don't care about it, mother. You may please yourself: but I ought to warn you, I have no faith.
我并不在乎，大媽?zhuān)S你便吧，不過(guò)我得提醒你，我并不相信。
