In the history of Yale University, one figure should never be ignored. It is Kingman Brewster, Jr. (June 17，1919-November 8，1988)，an educator, 17th president of Yale University. He is the only college president to appear on the covers of two authoritative magazines Time Magazine and Business Week. With his superb wisdom and courage, Kingman Brewster earned respect from both Yalies and non-Yalies.

Kingman Brewster Jr. was born to a rich family background in Longmeadow, a town in southern Massachusetts. He was descended from Elder William Kingman Brewster, the Pilgrim colonist leader and spiritual elder of the Plymouth Colony and a passenger on the Mayflower. While Kingman Brewster was a little boy, his parents separated and later divorced. He and his sister were raised by their mother, who later remarried to a music professor at Harvard University. The professor was by all accounts a good stepfather.

Kingman Brewster Jr. entered Yale University and graduated cum laude in 1941 from there. After graduation, he served briefly in Washington as special assistant coordinator for economics in the Office of Inter-American Affairs, directed by Nelson A. Rockefeller. On December 7，1941，with the attack on Pearl Harbor, he immediately volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy. During this period, he married Mary Louise Phillips.

After the war, he entered Harvard Law School and graduated magna cum laude in 1948. Then he went to Paris as assistant general counsel to Milton Katz, the United States Special Representative in Europe for the Economic Cooperation Administration. In 1949 and 1950, he was a research associate in the economics department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
