What could cause the spontaneous appearance of a universe?
是什么讓宇宙無中生有
At first, it seems a baffling problem.
起初這問題似乎令人困惑
After all,in our daily lives,things don't simply materialize out of the blue.
畢竟在日常生活中 東西不會憑空出現
You can't just click your fingers and summon up a cup of coffee when you feel like one,can you?
你不能弾彈手指 就在想喝時變出一杯咖啡吧
You have to make it out of other stuff,
你得用其它東西沖泡出來
like coffee beans,water,perhaps some milk and sugar.
像是咖啡豆 和水 也許還會加牛奶和糖
But travel down into this coffee cup...Through the milk particles...Down to the atomic level...
但我們往咖啡深處走 穿過牛奶粒子 到原子層次
And right down to the subatomic level...
再到亞原子層次
And you enter a world where conjuring something out of nothing is possible...
就進入了一個 能無中生有的世界 是有可能的
At least for a short while.
至少能短暫出現
That's because at this scale,particles such as protons
那是因為這個層次的 粒子和質子
behave according to the laws of nature we call quantum mechanics.
其行為依據的自然法則 是所謂的量子力學
And they really can appear at random,
它們可以隨機出現
stick around for a while,and then vanish again...
短暫停留 然后又消失無蹤
To reappear somewhere else.
在別處再度出現
Since we know the Universe itself was once very small
既然我們知道宇宙曾經很小
smaller than a proton, in fact this means something quite remarkable.
比質子還要小 這意味著一件了不起的事
