When plague hits Avignon,

the people expected the Pope to come to their salvation,

to go and intercede with God to stop the plague.

But Clement VI can't stop the plague.
但是克萊芒六世沒能阻止住這場瘟疫
It devastates Avignon,Killing 1300 people in a single day.

Pope Clement buys a field and buries 11,000 people.
克萊芒教皇買下一塊地 安葬了一萬一千民眾
But it is not enough.He tries a radical solution.
但這遠遠不夠安葬所有死者 他索性另尋出路
He consecrates the river Rhone...as a floating cemetery.
他將羅納河奉為一處 流動墓地
As bodies floated down the Rhone River,
目睹同胞們的尸身沿羅納河順流而下
people realized the Pope could do nothing for them.
人們意識到教皇己無能為力
Either God wasn't listening, or worse.
