Volkswagen, the world’s largest car manufacturer, has been caught cheating on US emissions tests. Up to 11 million Volkswagen diesel cars with defeat devices have been sold worldwide. The device, which can detect emissions test equipment, switches a diesel car’s engine to a clean low-performance mode during an e-test. When the car returns to the road with its passing grade, it switches back to regular mode, releasing up to 40 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxide. With fines, recalls, and the company’s reputation at stake, this scandal could cost the company over 30 billion dollars.
