In today's podcast, Kenya arrests Chinese nationals on suspicion of cybercrime
Nairobi police arrested 77 Chinese nationals after raiding the houses they rented in an upscale neighborhood, according to Daily Nation, a local English-language news outlet on December 3. The police went to the estate to examine what triggered a fire which killed one person earlier and found an equipment room with software, according to the newspaper, which was capable of infiltrating bank accounts, Kenya's M-Pesa mobile banking system and ATM machines. The report also cited the police as saying they suspected the individuals were preparing to raid the country's communication systems. All of the Chinese have been charged in a Nairobi court in connection with the activities at the premises, the report says. The investigation is still underway. According to the Associated Press, Ndegwa Muhoro, director of Kenya's Criminal Investigation Department, said they were also consulting experts to see whether the Chinese were committing crimes of espionage.
