Young cynic is a special phenorrienon after the "reform and opening up"(改革開(kāi)放) of the Chinese government, during the period of the fast economic development that occurred in China.

As a group, "fenqing" are very diverse in their opinions. However, they are usually nationalistic and patriotic(愛(ài)國(guó)的), and very much concerned with political issues. Nowadays, with the development of Internet, "fenqing" has been devolved into a term used predominately as a Internet slang. And whether "fenqing" is derogatory(不敬的) or not usually depends on "fenqing" themselves. Generally, the "fenqing" take pride in their beliefs and passion, considering themselves patriotic.

Their critics, however, may consider them obnoxious(討厭的), and refer to them using a pun shit-youth (same、pronunciation with "fengqing" in Chinese), which can be changed further to shitshit. In response, "fenqing" refer to their most vehement opponents as "hanjian" (traitor(s) of China) or "tewu" (spy/ spies).
