Robert Redford talks tech. Legendary actor and director discusses the intersection of art and technology.

CNNANCHOR:One of the ways mobile technology is adapting is by getting closer to the film industry, and one of Hollywood's best known names, Robert Redford, is joining the revolution. The movie star and filmmaker spoke with Adrian Finighan, I have to say, in a tux—check that out, too-at those mobile awards in Barcelona.
ROBERT REDFORD, ACTOR AND DIRECTOR:What interests me about modern technology, I'm more interested... I'm not so much interested in it except as a phenomenon in and of itself. What interests me is how new technology can interact with entertainment, which is art, and so that's where my interest comes in-how can... what new platforms can be created to increase opportunities for artists to tell their stories. And what sits at the bottom of it, no matter what's going on, no matter what the size of the screen is, or how short the film is, is I just don't believe that you can ever keep going forward without story. So, as long as you're able to tell a story on this new platform, then I think it's going to be successful.
ADRIAN FINIGHAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT:Does modern technology help or hinder as far as the medium of film, of storytelling, is concerned?
ROBERT REDFORD, ACTOR AND DIRECTOR:Yes, in other words, again it's storytelling. You have to have a good story. I mean I'm thinking, when I was a kid, you know, I grew up with funny papers. Main headlines didn't interest me when I was four, five, six years old, but the funny papers did, and one of the things I realized later on when I became a filmmaker, in looking to refine the work of filmmaking as a director, was that these... there were stories told in four panels, maybe five. That's it. You had to tell a story with a beginning, middle and an end, and it had to have an emotional grabbing point, it had to satisfy you, it had to entertain you. And that was just four panels. So if you can do it with a comic, you can do it with film. To me, it's a discipline that can be put on the filmmaker that I think is pretty healthy. I love the idea.
ADRIAN FINIGHAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT:Among the current generation of filmmakers, who interests you most? Who do you most admire?
ROBERT REDFORD, ACTOR AND DIRECTOR:What I really like are new filmmakers. I mean at the [Sundance film] festival this year, which we just finished, what was really... there were a lot of exciting things about it. One of them was the crossover, the amount of crossover that's occurring , that has a lot to do with this new technology. The new technology is sponsoring new ways of seeing things and new ways of doing things. And so suddenly in our festival this year we had more new filmmakers than we've ever had since we started. Secondly we had crossovers. We had... you had Bono and U2 coming with their 3D experimentaP film for IMAX. You had Martin McDonald, the playwright , with a first directing piece. You had poets, you had musicians, you had artists from different, other disciplines crossing over into film, and the work to be seen was really exciting. To me that's... anything new that comes along that still enables an artist to work and tell a story is exciting.
