Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, Hubei province, recently cancelled the women's 3-thousand-meter race and the men's 5-thousand-meter race at its university games.

Prior to this, many colleges in Beijing, Nanjing and Xi’an also cancelled their long-distance races. One university official says it’s because many students lack the stamina to finish the demanding course and ill-prepared runners could suffer injury or even death after the intense physical activity.

Analysts say a lack of sporting facilities and unhealthy lifestyles are a key to the problem.
