中國人最怕來生做牛做馬，因為很辛苦。牛馬辛辛苦苦幫人耕田，幫人背東西。最后還是被人宰馬宰牛且為樂，命運對牛未免太殘酷了。

上回我們就學到了一個跟牛有關的詞語（宰了小牛拿來款待客人）：kill the fatted calf。It means "to to celebrate in order to welcome a friend or relative that you have not seen for a long time". For another example: Annie's coming home, let's kill the fatted calf!

那么，英美人為何用“殺一只小牛”來表示這個意思呢？這就是我們今天要探尋的問題。

It is said that it comes from a story in the Bible when a father killed a young cow in order to celebrate the return of his son who he thought was dead. 這來源于《圣經》。《圣經. 路加福音》第十五章就記載了耶穌說的一個故事：有一個人要父親分些財產給他，拿著財產去了遠方花天酒地。不久，錢都花光了，他很后悔的回到父親身邊，父親高興得不得了，馬上叫仆人把養肥的小牛牽來殺了，讓大家吃喝取樂，因為我這個兒子是死而復活、失而復得的。現在，人們就用kill the fatted calf（把養肥的小牛殺了）這成語來說設盛宴熱情招待回家的游子或來訪的賓友。

我們來看一個小對話：

A: What will you do for your son who is gonna release from jail in two days?

A : 你兒子還有2天就要被釋放回家了，你準備如何慶祝呢？

B : I would rather kill the fatted calf for him in the restaurant than at home.

B : 我想在餐館弄一桌為他接風，不想在家弄了。
