作者簡介：

羅伯特·白朗寧（Robert Browning，1812—1889），英國十九世紀中葉詩人，出身富裕家庭，終生不事生產，寫詩過日。在英國文學史上他與丁尼生（Alfred Tennyson）齊名，在政治上傾向于資產階級自由黨中的激進派，在同他妻子伊麗莎白·白朗寧（也是著名詩人）長期寄居意大利期間，曾同情當地人民反抗奧地利占領者的革命斗爭。

白朗寧寫了許多長詩，頗有特色；他嘗試過詩劇的創作，則無多建樹；他的短詩之中，有兩類頗值一讀。一類是抒情詩。他的詩筆一般晦澀，但在一些抒情短詩里他卻做到以白描見長。另一類是戲劇性的獨白詩，用活躍的口語詞語和節奏，模擬人物口吻，一時獨步詩壇，無人能及。在題材上，詩人所歌詠的，除了愛情之外，多是處在奇幻處境里的人物的心理狀態，但也有反對教會與貴族專制的作品。

Oh, to be in England now that April's there,

And whoever wakes in England sees, some morning, unaware,

That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf

Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf,

While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough

In England - now!

And after April, when May follows

And the white-throat builds, and all the swallows!

Hark, where my blossomed pear-tree in the hedge

Leans to the field and scatters on the clover

Blossoms and dewdrops - at the bent spray's edge

That's the wise thrush: he sings each song twice over

Lest you should think he never could recapture

The first fine careless rapture!

And, tho' the fields look rough with hoary dew,

All will be gay when noontide wakes anew

The buttercups, the little children's dower

Far brighter than this gaudy melon-flower!
