1.第一句話中出現了landlord“房東”這個詞，文中說He's meeting the landlord to ask about renting an apartment. 這里，如果感到完全陌生，不可以通過本句中的后半部分renting an apartment，以及下文中談話可以準確推測出，landlord指代的是“租房子給別人的人”，也就是“房東”的意思，我們也可以將這個詞拆開，分成land─土地，和lord─主人，也可以推出“房主”的意思。
2.Jeff: Hello, do you have any vacancies?
這句話當中的vacancy是“空著的”意思，如：I see a vacancy board outside for a kitchen helper. Is it still available?
我在外面招工牌上看到有個廚房幫手的空缺。這空位現在還有嗎？
如果不明白這個詞的意思，我們可以先來看看答者的話Yes, something just opened up. “是的，有幾間剛剛open up開張；開業”,說明說話者詢問的是還有沒有正在出租的房子，也就是“空房”。
3.Jeff: Are utilities included in the rent?
utility這個詞在對話中出現多次，是個關鍵詞，可以推斷出是“水電費”的意思，因為下文中提到“Landlord: Gas and water are included. Yes, electricity is not included in the rent. 煤氣費和水費包含在內，但是電費自己出”。
