1.本篇文章開始的時候主要講的是作者的人生態度，包括他的“credo”（人生信條），I sympathize with the introvert as I would with the sickly, but both are missing a lot of life.這里有一個詞可能會阻聽力的進行：introvert，這個詞有“內向的；不喜歡交往的 ”的意思，是一個形容詞；即使我們不知道introvert的意思，下文緊接著提到“sickly多病的”，聯系前文的sympathize（同情），我們可以很快推斷出introvert在這里是與sickly相并列的“弱者”。

2.第二段當中出現了兩個專有名詞，即Assisi和Loyola，文中說As a Catholic, I am touched by Assisi and his animals, but Loyola and his army fascinate me.這里如果感到完全陌生，也不會影響理解全文，因為我們可以通過前文的As a Catholic（作為一個天主教徒） ，知道這兩個詞是與宗教有關的。

3.倒數第二段當中的This philosophy is not startling for its originality nor for its maturity.中的This philosophy。通過前文But I honestly think I could have survived them better, and perhaps avoided some of them altogether, if I’d gotten away from an obsession with myself. 可以推斷出，這里的philosophy就是指出上一句話。在英語里這些指示代詞，經常用到，要練習上下文才知道究竟指代的是什么。所以聽力要貫穿全文，提綱挈領地記住最重要的信息。
