1. Excuse me. My name is Richard Stewart. I'm a photographer.
這是Richard在與陌生人搭訕并介紹自己。
Excuse me 這個短語用來引起對方的注意。相當于漢語的“對不起，勞駕”。
自我介紹時可以先介紹自己的名字，再說明自己的職業。
介紹自己的名字時，可以像Richard一樣，說My name is Richard Stewart.
也可以像Mrs. Vann那樣，說I'm Martha Vann.

2. May I take a picture of you and your little boy?
May I...是一種很禮貌的征求別人的同意的說法，相當于“我可以...嗎？”。
Richard 想要為Mrs. Vann 母子拍照片，他首先要征得當事人的同意。

3. I appreciate your help.
這是在受別人幫助或聽了別人的忠告之后的感謝語。在Richard向Mrs. Vann說明了照片的用途后，Mrs. Vann欣然接受拍照的請求，之后Richard立即向對方表達了感謝。這里也可以說I really appreciate it.

4. Welcome to New York.
Welcome to… 是迎接客人的客套語。Richard與Mrs. Vann母子攀談幾句后得知母子二人來自于California，于是Richard對他們說，歡迎到紐約來。
又例如：Welcome to HJ English.

5. Can I help you?
在為別人提供幫助前，我們可以說Can I help you?
也可以說Let me...（讓我，允許我），如本文中，Richard對Alexandra說"Hey, let me take your picture!" 但是這種說法沒有Can I...的禮貌程度高。
如果我們愿意接受幫助，則可以回答"Oh, please." 或者"Yes, please."。也可以像Alexandra那樣很可愛的講"Wonderful. Please."

6. Great! / Terrific! / Nice!
在拍照的過程中，Mrs.Vann母子每在他的要求下擺一個新的姿勢，Richard都會對他們的配合給予肯定。他用到的"Great! Terrific! Nice!" 都是用來表示“太好了，好極了，很好”的意思。

7. We'll be looking for your book.
這里的look for是尋找的意思。

8. My pleasure. / You're welcome.
當別人對你表示感謝時，可以用"My pleasure."或者"You're welcome."來進行回應。

9. Would you like some coffee?
Would you like...相當于“你想要...嗎？”，在客氣地請對方做某事或請客時用。
如本文中，Richard問Alexandra“想來一點咖啡嗎”，他說 "Would you like some coffee?"
在談到自己的書Family Album, U.S.A.時，他問對方“想要看一看嗎”，"Would you like to see them?"
如果我們不想接受，就說"No, thank you."
如果愿意接受，則說"Yes. I'd like that." 或者"Yes. Please."

10. Here they are.
把東西給別人看時用。單數時用 Here it is.

11. Thanks.
在本情境中出現的兩次"Thanks"都是對于別人贊美的回應。
稱贊對方，或對方的家人，是美國人很重要的一種社交習慣，被人稱贊時，要表示樂于接受并愉快地感謝，不要急于否認或自貶，也不要表現得扭捏不安。所以無論是人家說你的英語好--"Your English is very good."，還是稱贊你的夫人很漂亮--"Oh, she's very pretty."，都不必不好意思，只要說聲 "Thank you" 就可以了。

12. And what about your family?
What about…在這里用以詢問別人的情況，相當于Tell me about…

13. the Bronx
是紐約市的五個行政區之一。另外的四個如下：
Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island

14. Hispanic
意思是西班牙語系的，西班牙的。Alexandra和一個講西班牙語的家庭一起生活。

15. It was nice meeting you. / It was a pleasure meeting you.
很高興認識你。與新朋友第一次見面時可用此用語告別。

16. I've got to go.
這句表達的意思是“我必須得走了”，與 I must go, I must be off之類的告別語同義。

17. By the way…
此短語在轉換話題或者作補充說明時用，相當于漢語中的“順便說一下……” 。

Family Album, U.S.A. It's an album of pictures of the United States. Richard takes many pictures for his album. He photographs the cities like New York... and other special places. He photographs people working: police, ambulance drivers, steel workers, doctors. Philip Stewart, Richard's father, is a doctor. He's a pediatrician, a children's doctor.
