LESSON 114 LABOR
第一百一十四課 做工
Every child should be trained to dexterity in some useful branch of productive industry, not in order that he shall certainly follow that pursuit,
每個(gè)孩子都應(yīng)該在某些富有成效行業(yè)的有益分支接受靈巧方面的訓(xùn)練，此舉的目的并非意在他肯定能遵照職業(yè)規(guī)范，
but that he may at all events be able to do so in case he shall fail in the more intellectual or artificial calling which he may prefer to it.
而是一旦他未能從事他心儀的需要投入更多智慧或人工的職業(yè)，無論如何都能予以補(bǔ)救。
Let him seek to be a doctor, lawyer, preacher, poet, if he will;
如果他愿意的話，還是讓他努力成為醫(yī)生、律師、布道者和詩人吧。
but let him not stake his all on success in that pursuit, but have a second line to fall back upon if driven from his first.
但是，不要讓他把成功寄托在工作上，而是如果他的推動(dòng)力源自第一工作，那么在從事屬于第二工作時(shí)會(huì)掉隊(duì)的。
Let him be so reared and trained that he may enter, if he will, upon some intellectual calling in the sustaining consciousness that he need not debase himself,
要是他愿意的話，還是讓他接受某些需要投入較多智力的職業(yè)方面的訓(xùn)練，假如推動(dòng)力源于他自己的選擇，在他的意識(shí)中灌輸他不必貶低自己，
nor do violence to his convictions, in order to achieve success therein, since he can live and thrive in another (if you choose, humbler) vocation,
這樣也不會(huì)違背他的信仰，目的是從此便能取得成功。因?yàn)樗苌畹煤芎茫诹硪粋€(gè)職業(yè)中（如果是他以更謙卑的姿態(tài)選擇的話）也能如魚得水，
if driven from that of his choice. This buttress to integrity, this assurance of self-respect,
這個(gè)通向完善的扶壁，這種對(duì)自尊的把握，
is to be found in a universal training to efficiency in Productive Labor.
這在富有成效的工作所需要接受的效率方面的培訓(xùn)中非常普遍。
