第二十七課 法國軍隊從莫斯科撤退
Magnificence of ruin! what has Time,
這片宏偉的廢墟啊！經歷了歷史的消磨，
In all it ever gazed upon of war,
觀望了無數次戰爭，
Of the wild rage of storm, or deadly clime,
曾在狂野的風暴中屹立，曾在致命的氣候下喘息
Seen, with that battle's vengeance to compare?
看哪！相比那場復仇之戰，這又算得了什么？
How glorious shone the invaders' pomp afar!
侵略者們排場隆重，氣勢恢宏！
Like pampered lions from the spoil they came:
他們來了，就像一群放縱嬌慣的獅子：
The land before them silence and despair,
他們眼下的土地沉默而絕望，
The land behind them massacre and flame.
他們身后的土地慘敗而火紅
Blood will have tenfold blood! What are they now? —A name.
大片大片的血啊，一層蓋過一層！那些死去的士兵呢？——只留下不被遺忘的名字
Homeward by hundred thousands, column deep,
歸途千萬里，還是只將名字留在這圓柱之上吧，
Broad square, loose squadron, rolling like the flood,
寬闊的廣場，散亂的隊伍，像洪水一樣涌動著
When mighty torrents from their channels leap,
當他們水渠里的洪流翻滾跳躍
Rushed through the land the haughty multitude,
傲慢的人群在這片土地上穿梭，
Billow on endless billow: on through wood,
無邊的巨浪一波未停，一波又起：穿過茂密的樹林
O'er rugged hill, down sunless, marshy vale,
躍過崎嶇的山丘，下過陰暗的沼澤，
The death-devoted moved, to clangour rude
那不懼死亡的步伐，發出粗魯的丁當聲
Of drum and horn, and dissonant clash of mail.
夾雜著戰鼓聲和號角聲，還有那盔甲刺耳的碰撞聲。
Glancing disastrous light before that sunbeam pale.
在日光暗淡之前凝視著那毀滅的光亮
Again they reached thee, Borodino!
他們又來了，波羅底諾！
Still upon the loaded soil the carnage lay,
這片再次承載了屠殺的沉重的土地，
The human harvest, now stark, stiff, and chill;
曾經收獲莊稼的土地，此刻已經變得荒涼、破碎、寒冷；
Friend, foe, stretched thick together, clay to clay.
敵我的尸體落在一起，用泥土一層又一層覆蓋。
In vain the startled legions burst away—
受驚的軍隊急速四散——
The land was all one naked sepulchre:

The shrinking eye still glanced on grim Decay;
眼睛漸漸無法睜開，眼神渙散
Still did the hoof and heel their passage tear
蹄和踵撕裂的戰馬還在前行
Through cloven helms and arms, and corses mouldering drear.
穿過劈開的頭盔和斷肢殘骸，穿過崩塌的沉寂
The field was as they left it; fosse and fort
戰場還是那個戰場；護城河和城堡
Streaming with slaughter still, but desolate—
仍舊流著屠殺的血液，只不過，是更荒涼了——
The cannon flung dismantled by its port:
大炮被端口猛地震裂：
Each knew the mound, the black ravine whose strait
他們都還認得那個土堆，那片黑色的峽谷
Was won and lost, and thronged with dead, till Fate Had fixed upon the victor—half undone.
是勝利和失敗的交鋒之地，尸體遍野，直到命運認定了勝利者——走完了人生一半的旅程。
There was the hill from which their eyes elate
那些在他們眼里歡欣雀躍的山丘
Had seen the burst of Moscow's golden zone:
見證了莫斯科黃金地帶的爆發：
But Death was at their heels—they shuddered and rushed on.
只是死神已經離他們很近——他們顫抖著向前沖去。
