The merchant, feeling now certain that the dog was mad, drew a pistol from his pocket, and took aim.
商人現在確定，他的狗真是瘋了。于是，他從口袋里掏出手槍向他的狗瞄準。
In a moment the poor dog lay weltering in its blood;
一瞬間，這只可憐的狗翻滾在血泊之中，
and its master, unable to bear the sight, spurred on his horse.
它的主人不忍心看到這幅場景，策馬揚鞭飛奔而去。
"I am most unfortunate," said he to himself;
“我真是倒霉透了，”他自言自語道，
"I had almost rather have lost my money than my dog."
“我寧可丟錢也不想沒有狗?！?/div>
Thereupon he stretched out his hand for his treasure;
這么想著，他伸出手拍了拍自己的錢袋子，
but no bag was to be found!
卻發現錢袋子不見了！
In a moment, he discovered his mistake,
一瞬間，他終于明白自己犯了一個怎樣的錯誤，
and upbraided himself for disregarding the signs which his dog had made to him.
他為自己沒有注意他的狗用各種方式向他發出警告而自責不已。
He turned his horse, and rode back to the place where he had stopped.
他調轉馬頭往回趕，經過了原先停下的地方。
He saw the marks of blood as he proceeded;
他繼續前行時，看見路上的一大灘血跡，
but nowhere was his dog to be seen on the road.
可是他的狗卻不見了。
At last he reached the spot where he had rested, and there lay the forgotten bag,
最后，他回到之前坐下休息的那棵樹下，被忘記拿走的錢袋就躺在那兒，
with the poor dog, in the agonies of death, watching beside it!
邊上還有他的那只狗，到死都想著回到主人的錢袋邊看好它。
When he saw his master, he showed his joy by feebly wagging his tail.
當它看見主人回來的時候，無力地搖了搖尾巴表示它的喜悅。
He tried to rise, but his strength was gone;
它想爬起來，但已經沒有力氣這么做了，
and after stretching out his tongue to lick the hand that was now fondling him in deep sorrow, he closed his eyes in death.
它最后舔了舔主人的手，閉上了眼睛。而它的主人此時正愛撫著這只狗，陷入了深切的悲傷之中。
