I smelled a smell of cooking． 我聞到了燒菜做飯的味道。
上面的兩個(gè)smell分別做動詞和名詞，一個(gè)表示嗅（味道），一個(gè)表示味道。
I smelled something burning.我聞到東西燒焦的味道。
smell只表示能夠聞到某某氣味，并不等于很刻意地去聞，如果專門去聞某東西的味道就要用介詞at.
She smelled at the flower.她聞聞那朵花。
smell也表示發(fā)出味道，但smell并不都代表好的味道，例如：
Your body smells,you should take a shower.你的身體發(fā)出臭味，應(yīng)去洗個(gè)澡。
This fish smells.這魚發(fā)臭了。
smell作名詞可表示味道，但也包括不好的味道。
I cannot stand the big smell from the garbage.我受不了那垃圾傳來的臭味。
