[14] Something that encroaches on something else literally seizes it with its ‘hooks’. The word was borrowed from Old French encrochier ‘catch in a hook’, hence ‘seize’.

Tragedy 悲劇

　　在古希臘有一種吟游詩人，他們走村串戶，四處游蕩，為人們朗誦或演唱敘事史詩。這種吟游詩人叫tragoidos；這里的trago，就是“goat（山羊）”；oidos即“singer（歌手）“。英語的tragedy就是從trago，即“山羊”演變來的。

　　可是“悲劇”怎么會是從“山羊”變來的呢？關于這一點，歷來眾說紛紜，莫衷一是，有一種說法是，當時的悲歌是為向古希臘的戲劇之神 Dionysus獻祭的山羊而唱的，另一種說法是，“山羊”是作為節日的獎品發放的。還有一種說法，古希臘的來茲波斯島的Arion在節日時身穿山羊皮衣向一幫色情狂演說，招致了感情奔放的悲劇。
