【詞義辨析】
occur, happen, take place
三者都表示“發生”，都是不及物動詞。
happen指“偶然發生”時，主語為“事”；當主語是“人”時，意為“碰巧”。happen to sb．／sth． 指不好的事情發生在某人（物）身上。
He happened to know the place.
他碰巧知道那個地方。
occur指“發生”時可與 happen 換用，但后接to sb．／sth．時，兩者含義不同：；occur to sb．／sth． 指“某種思想等呈現于某人的知覺中”。
Didn’t it occur to you to phone them about it?
你難道就沒想過給他們打個電話？
take place表示“發生”，可與 happen 或occur換用，但其后面一般不接 to sb．／sth．結構；指必然會發生的事情時，多用 take place；此外take place 還可表示“舉行某種活動”。
