一.Hardly：adv.幾乎不, 簡直不, 剛剛
【詞義辨析】
hardly, scarcely
這一對副詞都有“幾乎不”、“幾乎沒有”的否定意味，但涵義重心有細微的差異。
hardly強調“困難”，指程度而言，常用以修飾表示能力的詞，與can、ever、any等詞連用。
He hardly knew what to say.
他簡直不知道說什么才好。
I can hardly believe that some socialites and dignitaries are involved in syndicated crime.
我簡直不能相信，一些社會名流，達官政要竟然涉及集團罪行。
scarcely強調“不足”，主要指數量而言，常與enough、sufficient、any或數詞連用。
When he played the piano he was scarcely four years old.
他懂得彈鋼琴還不滿四歲。
The tram was so crowded that there was scarcely sufficient room for you.
電車上十分擁擠，幾乎沒有你立足之地。
At midnight，scarcely any taxi could be found in the streets.
午夜時分，街上幾乎看不到一輛的士。
【例句用法】
Hardly anybody came.
幾乎沒有人來。
Hardly had the game begun when it started raining.
比賽剛剛開始就下起雨來。
You can hardly blame me if you don't like the place, as you were the one who begged me to take you there.
如果你不喜歡那地方，你絕不該怪我，因為是你求我把你帶到那去的。
I can hardly wait to hear the news.
我迫不及待地想聽到這個消息。
二.suppose：vt.假設, 假定, 認為, 想, 應該, 讓(虛擬語氣) vi.推測
【語法用法】
suppose后可加that引導的從句，且句中that可省略。
I suppose (that) he is about forty.
我猜他大概四十歲。
suppose和supposing在句子中常表示一樣的意思。
Suppose he is absent, what shall we do?
Supposing he is absent, what shall we do?
假設他缺席了，我們要怎么辦？
但suppose在句子開頭屬于祈使語氣，而supposing是現在分詞，且美國人比較少用supposing；
suppose有時指“建議”。
Suppose you come to my house tomorrow morning, and I will show you all my books.
我建議你明天早晨來我加，我會把我所有的書都展示給你看。
【詞義辨析】
assume, presume, suppose, guess, postulate
這些動詞均含為“假設，猜想，推測”之意。
assume指有很少或完全無根據的武斷推測或不合邏輯的推理。
presume側重以過去經驗或根據現實的某些感覺把某事認定為是事實。
suppose常用詞，意義較廣泛，指缺乏確切事實，根據一些現象進行的推測，也可指為論證而提出合乎邏輯推理的某種假定，有時僅表示自己的意見。
guess常用詞，指毫無根據僅憑個人主觀臆斷或碰運氣的猜測。
postulate指為證實一個理論的正確性而進行的假設。
【例句用法】
They were supposed to be here an hour ago.
他們應該在一小時以前到達這里。
I suppose you want to borrow money from me again?
我猜你又要找我借錢了吧?
Creation supposes a creator.
有了創造者，才能有創造。
We suppose that the situation will improve.
我們認為形勢會好轉。
