一.begin：v.開始, 著手
【語法用法】
begin后接的動詞可有多種形式。若其表示的意思是“有意志的”，可以用不定式或動名詞。
He will soon begin to write a novel.
He will soon begin writing a novel.
寫小說是有意志的。
在結構be beginning中，后面多用不定式，避免...ing的重復。若其表示的意思是“沒有意志的”，多用不定式，不怎么用動名詞。
She began to like novels at twenty.
愛好小說本身是沒意志的。若該動詞是屬于被動語態的，也多用不定式，不怎么用動名詞。
Begin指“開始”，begin with指“以……開始”。
I shall begin this book today.
我今天將開始看這本書。
I shall begin with this book today.
我今天將先看這本書，有后看別的書的意思。
begin后一般不加from，且絕對不能接from ... to ...。
The journey begins from Shanghai.
句中的from最好換成其他介詞如at。
The journey begins from Shanghai to Beijing.
這句是完全錯誤的。習慣上begin at the beginning和begin from the beginning表達都很普遍，均指“從頭開始”；
begin用于主動語態時，后可加被動結構。
The book began to be read (by him) last Sunday.
begin用于被動語態時，容易出現雙重被動的錯誤，應盡量避免。
The book was begun (by him) to be read last Sunday.
這句話雖語法上無誤，卻不符習慣，因實際上begin to ...的結構是不能作被動語態的。
一般來說，表示持續動作的動詞同表示時刻的詞是不能一起使用的。如rain（下雨）是表示持續動作的動詞，five o'clock是表示時刻的詞語，兩者不可搭配使用。不能說It rained at five o'clock. 可用begin去連接。
It began to rain at three o'clock.
雨是在三點的時候開始下的。
英美人普遍使用的幾個句子：
I felt I did not begin to understand him.
我覺得自己一點也不了解他。
Your suggestion does not begin to meet the difficulty.
你的建議一點解決不了這個困難。Nothing has begun to interest her so much as folk music.
沒有什么東西曾經像民間音樂一樣引起她的興趣。
begin和commence意思相似，但前者的使用比后者普遍，尤其是口語中。通常正式文字中，會使用commence，如commence hostilities（開始交戰）和Hostilities commenced late that year。commence后多接動名詞，較少接不定式，且多用在有意志的事上；
begin與start的比較：
通常來說，begin同start基本上沒有大區別。
I began/started teaching when I was 24.
我24歲時，開始教書。
相對而言，begin較start要正式一些。
We will begin the meeting with a message from the President.
It's starting to rain.
不過在某些時候，人們習慣用start，如表示‘start a journey’（開始旅程）和‘start working’（開始工作）中，不用begin；
用現在式指未來的事時，也可以用begin來表示。
The show begins next week.
表演下周開始。
【錯句舉例與錯句分析】
錯句: The meeting had begun for five minutes when he arrived there.
訂正: The meeting had on for five minutes when he arrived there.
翻譯: 他到的時候，會議已經開始五分鐘了。
分析: begin作為瞬間動詞，不可與表示“一段時間”的狀語連用。
【詞義辨析】
begin, start, commence, initiate, inaugurate
這些動詞均含有“開始”之意。
begin最常用詞，含義廣泛，其反義詞是end，多用于行動、工作等的開始。
start在許多場合可與begin通用，但start側重動作的起點。
commence可與begin換用，但commence系書面正式用詞，語氣莊重，特指有正式程序或一定儀式，或某種正式行動的“開始”。
initiate指創始或發起，側重某過程的第一步，不考慮結束，強調起始。
inaugurate指正式而隆重的開始。
二.best：adj.最好的 adv.最, 最好地 n.最好的人(或物) v.優于,打敗
【語法用法】
at best 或者at the best都可以解釋為“從事態發展最好一方面看”或者說“充其量”。
At (the) best,the old woman will live another 2 years.
at his/her best可解釋為“在他/她的最佳狀態”。
She is at her best in writing short story.
a best book，a best girl等表達方式是不正確的；
美式英語get/have the best of與英式英語get the better of意思相同，解釋為“勝過，在……中占上風”；
best seller一般解釋為“暢銷書或唱片”也可以解釋為“書的著作人”；
best引導的that從句中，should可省略。
It's the best that she （should） listen to the music once again.
【例句用法】
He's difficult at the best of times usually he's impossible.
他即使在情緒最好的時候，都很難相處－－平常就更令人受不了了。
The facilities were not ideal but we managed as best we could.
設備不理想，但我們已經盡了最大的努力。
She's a career woman and a mother, so she has the best of both worlds.
她又當職業婦女，又當母親，兩全其美。
