【語法用法】
美國人常將check指“支票”，而英國人則常用cheque；
check作及物動詞時，詞組check up指“查核”，而check作不及物動詞時，表示“查核”用check up on；
check with指“跟……符合”，check up with指“和……符合”。

examination of check up在美國指“全身檢查”，而英國人一般用physical overhaul。

【詞義辨析】
restrain, check, refrain, bridle, curb, inhibit
這些動詞均含“阻止、抑制、制止”之意。
restrain含義廣，指用強力或權力去阻止或限制某人做某事。
check多指阻止前進或繼續發展。
refrain常指暫時對某種行動或沖動的抑制。
bridle指抑制住強烈的感情或欲望。

【詞義辨析】
depend, rely
這兩個動詞后跟on(upon)，均有“依賴、依靠”之意。
depend側重指因自身能力不足或缺乏自信心而依靠他人或物給予幫助或支持。
rely通常包含著以前的經驗證明對方是能依賴的意思。
【例句用法】
A lot will depend on how she responds to the challenge.
在很大程度上將取決於她對這一難題的反應。
We are depending on you to finish the paper by Friday.
我們相信你在星期五之前可以完成這篇論文。
The country depends heavily on its tourist trade.
