off the hook

釣魚時用魚鉤(fish hook)，當魚兒被鉤住就表示麻煩，能逃脫離倒鉤，就表示逃過一難，所以當我們說：I'm off the hook (我脫離倒鉤) ，比喻‘逃離險境，免于受責’的意思。這個險境可以是大事情或小事情，也可用：I got away with it (我逃離某情況) / I'm not responsible anymore(不是我的責任) / It's not my problem anymore (再不是我的問題了)。

Hook是釣鉤，俚語off the hook（脫離釣鉤）即‘可免負責、困難、懲罰等’，常見于成語to get/let somebody off the hook，例如：(1) I'm afraid I have an appointment this evening and can't do overtime. Please let me off the hook.（我今晚有約在先，不能加班，這次加班請免了我吧）。(2) I cannot perjure myself to get him off the hook.（我不能為了幫助他脫身而發假誓）。
