Is the Donors’ List Acceptable?
Living in a world of change, we can not predict what will happen in the future. We probably will be reduced to helplessness by unexpected accidents and natural disasters. It will be greatly appreciated that many unknown people will offer helping hands. As usual, donors’ names and donations are made public in bulletin board or in other forms by donation proposal initiators. It is believed that the juxtaposition of donors’names and their donation will make compliments to donors and encourage more people to offer a helping hand. For me, I think it is enough to tell the public what donation has been collected by initiators but donors’ names and their donation should not be made public.
Firstly, while people consider offering a helping hand, they do not intentionally expect being rewarded. When the donors’ list is made public, the public will not only be impressed by the benevolence of the donors, they will also believe that those donors are expecting compliments from both the public and donation receivers. In the case that there are donors who donate much more money than average, it is likely that thepublic will accuse those generous donors of showing off, instead of complimenting their benevolence and generosity. While people do not expect reward for their benevolence, they do not expect accusation, either. Besides, benevolence can not be measured by the amount of donations. The publication of donors’ list may direct people to think otherwise. Those who donate more money would be regarded more benevolent than thosewho donate less. Anyway, it is unfair to accuse those who donate due amount in accord with their purse.
Secondly, the publication of donors’ list may pose potential dangers to donors. Generally speaking, people will donate what is reasonable in line with their financial situations. Those who rank high in big companies or run their own business usually are expected to donate more money. However, for many Chinese people, making a name is not a good thing. That is why business people always keep silent when asked how much money they have earned. One reason for their being afraid of making a name is that malicious people will become jealous. In some extreme cases, criminals may calculate the amount of affordable ransom based on the donation if they kidnap these wealthy donors.
Finally, what concerns donors most is whether their donations can be timely forwarded to those in need. Given aforementioned negative impact of donors’ list, it is not necessary to make a donors’ list.
