Pompholyx typically appears on the sides of palms, fingers or fingertips. The blisters are usually the size of millet grain, and are sometimes slightly raised or embedded under the skin. This condition is seasonal, peaking in summer and resolving spontaneously in winter.
Contrary to common misconceptions, it is neither contagious nor related to fungal infections like athlete's foot, though ruptured blisters heighten infection risks through environmental exposure. Primarily impacting adolescents and young adults, pompholyx seldom occurs in the elderly.
The exact cause remains unclear, but it is considered an eczema-like hypersensitivity reaction.
Pompholyx is a self-limited disease, often resolving within weeks. Persistent or severe cases require medical attention.
Preventive strategies emphasize skin protection and lifestyle adjustments. Maintaining hand dryness with pH-neutral cleansers, avoiding metal jewelry during wet tasks, and using cotton-lined gloves for chores are all ways to reduce irritation. Sunscreen and moisturizers fortify the skin barrier, while stress management through adequate sleep and anti-inflammatory diets rich in vegetables mitigate triggers. During unavoidable exposures, such as handling acidic foods, double-gloving with breathable inner layers and prompt replacement gloves for damp gloves are both essential.
