Meet Yannis Stournaras, the guy with the toughest job in the world.

The 55-year old economist has just been named as Greece's new finance minister and will lead the country's negotiations with its European partners to ease the austerity program that comes with Greece's latest 173 billion bailout.

But Mr. Stournaras, a widely-respected technocrat who has been in and out of government for more than a decade, may have one advantage: he's no politician. Instead, he is a plainly-spoken ambassador of common sense, known for his liberal critiques of Greece's overregulated economy.

Above all, he was also willing to take a job that no one else wanted - and only a day after the previous designate for the post, banker Vassilis Rapanos, bowed out because of health reasons.

"He was the best choice from a shrinking group of people that were willing to take the post,"said a senior official in the conservative New Democracy party that heads Greece's three-way coalition government.

Mr. Stounaras, who helped negotiate Greece's entry into the euro zone in the late 1990s, also speaks the language of the creditors. "He knows the issues, the people involved and where there's space for Greece to negotiate," the official said.

He had a very brief stint as development minister under the previous, one-month long caretaker government that preceded the country's June 17 elections.

Mr. Stournaras was born in Athens on December 10th, 1956.

He studied economics at the University of Athens before obtaining a doctorate from Oxford University, specializing in Economic Theory and Policy. After his studies, he worked as a lecturer at St. Catherine's College, Oxford, and at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies.
