When you think of something boiling, you probably picture a pot on the stove,

but there'sanother kitchen appliance that brings liquid to a boil, not to heat food, but cool it.

It sounds crazy,but household refrigerators keep food cold by bringing liquid fluorocarbon to a boil.
這事兒聽起來很不可思議，但是家用冰箱就是通過使碳氟化物沸騰來冷藏食物。
How Does This Work?
這其中的原理是什么呢？
Fluorocarbon coolant flows through two sets of coils in your fridge, absorbing heat inside andreleasing it outside, into your kitchen.
碳氟化物冷卻劑流經冰箱的兩組盤管，吸收冰箱內部的熱量并將其釋放到外部。
You've probably seen one set of coils behind the fridge, in back.
你可能看到在冰箱后側有一組一組盤管，
That's where heat's released.
熱量就是在那里被散發。
Hidden inside the fridge is the other set of coils, where heat'sabsorbed.
而藏在冰箱內部的另一組盤管則是用來吸收熱量的。
It's inside these hidden coils that liquid coolant comes to a boil.
就是在這組內置盤管里，液態冷卻劑會沸騰。
What makes the coolant boil?
是什么使冷卻劑沸騰的呢？
The secret is in the relationship between pressure and boiling point.
答案在于壓強和沸點之間的關系。
When pressure changes, so does the temperature at which a substance comes to a boil.
當壓強發生改變，物質的沸點也會跟著變化。
As the liquid coolant passes through a valve into the hidden coils, the pressure drops.
隨著液體冷卻劑經過一個閥門進入內置盤管，壓強就會降低。
This pressure change makes the coolant's boiling point drop below the chilly temperature in the fridge.
壓強的變化使冷卻劑的沸點降到比冰箱內部的低溫還要低。
So, some of the coolant boils immediately and evaporates into a gas inside the coil.
這樣，部分冷卻劑立即沸騰，在盤管內汽化。
Evaporation uses up lots of heat energy.
汽化作用會消耗掉大部分熱能。
As the coolant continues to boil and evaporate, it absorbs heat fromthe air in the fridge, making it even colder inside.
隨著冷卻劑不停地沸騰汽化，冰箱中空氣的熱量被吸收，使得冰箱內部溫度更低。
So that's how boiling fluorocarbon cools your food.
沸騰的碳氟化物就是這樣冷卻了食物。
