年底,雷貝卡相繼去世。三天前她就把自己鎖在臥室里,跟隨她多年的女仆阿金尼達不得不向當局提出破門的請求。門一打開,只見雷貝卡歪著由于生癬而禿了頂的腦袋,躺在自己那張孤零零的床上,象小蝦似地蜷縮著身子,嘴里還含著自己的一只大拇指。奧雷連諾第二獨自承擔了安葬事宜,他想把她的屋子整修一下,賣掉它。無奈這間屋子里滲透了毀滅的氣息:油漆剛一涂上墻壁,就又剝落下來,用厚厚的一層石灰水也無法阻擋;雜草冒出了地面;房柱在悶熱的常春藤包圍中一根一根地腐爛。
這就是雨停后馬孔多的生活。萎靡遲鈍的人哪里抵得住健忘癥,這種健忘癥使他們逐漸忘記了所有的往事。突然,在尼蘭德投降周年紀念日那天,共和國總統的幾個使者奉命來到了馬孔多,無論如何要把奧雷連諾上校多次拒絕的勛章授予英雄的后代。使者們為了找到一個了解這些后代蹤跡的人,整整輾轉了一個晚上。奧雷連諾第二差點鬼迷心竅地接受那個勛章,以為它畢竟是純金的。佩特娜。 柯特卻告誡他說,這將是一種不體面的行為,他才放棄了自己的打算,盡管總統的代表們已經雇來樂隊,在隆重的授勛儀式上的發言也已準備好了。就在這個時候,一些吉卜賽人——最后一批繼承梅爾加德斯學問的人,來到了馬孔多。他們發現這個市鎮荒蕪不堪,它的居民跟外面的世界完全隔絕;于是吉卜賽人又拿著一塊塊吸鐵石,把它們充作巴比倫學者的最新發明,走家串戶,而且又開始用放大鏡聚集陽光。有不少好奇的人張大嘴巴,盯著臉盆跳下木架,鍋子向吸鐵石滾去;也有不少人準備付出五十個生丁,不勝驚訝地瞧著一個吉卜賽女人從嘴里取出假牙,接著又把它裝回原處。在空蕩蕩的火車站旁,現在只有舊式蒸汽機車停留片刻,拖著幾節不載人、不載貨的黃色車廂——這就是昔日鐵路上殘留下來的一切,看不到一列客車載滿旅客、掛著布勞恩先生的專用車廂,那種車廂里放著主教安樂椅,裝著玻璃頂;也看不到一列貨車,載著一百二十節車廂的水果,通宵達旦、絡繹不絕地駛近車站。有一天,法官們來到馬孔多,調查安東尼奧·伊薩貝爾神父關于離奇的瘟疫襲擊鳥兒流浪的猶太人遇害的報告,正遇上可敬的神父在跟一群娃娃玩捉迷藏,他們便認定他的報告是老年人幻覺的結果,把他送進了癡人收容所。幾天以后,奧古斯托·安格爾神父,一個最新煉丹術的專家,來到這個市鎮,他一本正經、大膽粗魯,一天幾次親手敲打各式各樣的鐘,使教徒的心靈一直處于振奮狀態;他還從這一家走到那一家,喚醒一個個貪睡的人去聽彌撒。然而沒過一年,奧古斯托·安格爾神父就不得不承認自己失敗了:他也無力抵御滯留在空氣中的惰氣,無力抵御滾燙的灰塵——它到處彌漫,使得一切都顯出衰老的樣子。熱得不堪忍受的午休時刻,擺到午餐桌上的肉丸子,總要使他昏昏欲睡。
