Griffin B. The importance of ethics needed to work towards the common good it also shown through the strategic initiative utilized during the Cold War. After WWII the world was on the brink of nuclear war. The United States and the Soviet Union had been contradictory allies since the formation of the Soviet Union during WWI in the Bolshevik revolution The Soviet Union and the United States were however able to avoid direct fighting through means of ethical behavior. Conferences of SALT I and II and several other arms reductions conferences helped to stem the growing tensions of the Cold War. Leaders like Gorbachev and Nixon, despite their views towards the other nations, initiated in negotiations to avoid the loss of life. This use of ethical behavior in a time of surmounting tensions saved the lives of millions, and ensured the unfaltering progression of a world society.
