Our slang for today is all about parties!
我們今天的俚語是關于聚會的
So you know what parties are. It is an event with a lot of fun, you dance, talk to people.
你知道聚會是什么，是一個很有意思的活動，可以一起跳舞或者和別人聊天
It can also be the number of people in a group. If you go to a restaurant, and there is just you, and

you say “party of one please”.
它也可以代表一個團體里的人數。如果你一個人去飯店，你可以說party of one
And the host will take you to a table that has one chair. Or you can say a party of two if there are two

of you, et cetera.
然后領班會帶你到一個桌子和椅子的位置就餐。如果有兩個人的話你可以說party of two，以此類推
And there are some slangs that use the word “party”. One is pity party.
有一些俚語里用到了party這個詞，例如pity party
Pity is when you feel bad for somebody. When you have a pity party, you are feeling sorry for yourself.
Pity是同情的意思。當你有一個pityparty，意思是你很自憐
Usually involves with talking a lot to people about how terrible things are
一般包含大家說一些事情有多么糟糕
and someone will tell you “stop throwing yourself a pity party, it’s not that bad. Let’s go out and

get some icecream!”
然后有個人告訴你不要自憐，事情沒有那么糟，我們還是去吃點冰淇淋吧
So pity party is when you feel sorry for yourself and you don’t try to make it any better.
Pity party就是形容當你為自己感到遺憾并且不嘗試著去改變
Another slang that uses the word “party” is party pooper.
另外一個有party這個單詞的俚語是party pooper
You know what poop is, I don’t need to talk about that.
你知道poop是什么吧，我不需要去講關于這個的
A party pooper is someone who is basically throwing themselves a pity party a lot.
Party pooper就是一個人總把自己放在一個很自憐的心態上
A party pooper is someone who is stopping everyone else from having fun.
一個partypooper的人總是讓大家很掃興
You know who I’m talking about. That one friend who says
你知道吧，有些人總會說
“What? You want to go to that park and play basketball? It’s way to far, what if it rains? What if

someone is there already?
什么？你想去那里打球？太遠了，如果下雨怎么辦？如果已經有人了怎么辦？
What if my mom sees us? I’m supposed to be studying. It won’t be any fun.”
如果我媽媽看見我們怎么辦？我應該在學習才對。肯定不會很有意思的
And someone says “Shut up, Brian, you are such a party pooper.”
這時候有人會說，布萊恩，閉嘴，你太讓人掃興了
So party pooper is someone who stops everybody else from having fun.
所以partypooper就是一個令別人掃興的人
Now onto sentence structure. Here’s our example:
現在我們來看看句型這是我們的例子
“While Brian was at home studying, the rest of us played basketball in the park and got free ice

cream.”
當布萊恩在家學習的時候，我們在公園里打籃球并且得到了免費的冰淇淋
While A did B, C did D.
當A在做B的時候，C做了D
While my parents were sleeping, my friends and I went outside and looked at the stars.
當我父母睡覺的時候，我和朋友們出去看星星了
One last example, “While a painting dried, Fred cleaned off his brushes and desk.”
最后一個例子是當一張畫的顏料在干的時候，弗萊德清理了筆刷和桌子
Usually you use it to either talk about someone doing a couple of things at once, or two different

people doing different things at the same time.
一般用在一個人在同時做兩件事情的時候，或者兩個不同的人在同時做兩件不同的事
So that is our sentence structure, feel free to make your own sentence with it.

Our etymology for today is “struct”, the Latin root for to build, to build up, to arrange.
我們今天的詞源是struct，在拉丁語里是建造，整理的意思
When I heard “struct”, I immediately though “construction”.
當我聽到struct，我會想到construction
Construction means to build something. Or it can mean the thing that you built, or the quality of that

thing.
Construction的意思是建造，或者指的是所建造的一個物體
It’s a really useful word. But when you think construction, you think of something being built,

something being arranged.
這是一個很有用的詞。當你想到construction的時候，你會想到一個所建造和整理的物體
But again, remember, you can also talk about the thing that was built afterwards and you can say

the quality is also the construction of that thing.
不過construction這個詞也代表一個物體的建造質量
You can actually end up with a sentence saying
你也可以說
“After the construction of the house, we could finally see the quality of the construction of that

construction.”
當這個房子的建成了，我們終于可以看到這個建筑的質量
A bit confusing, let’s do an easier word.
聽上去很困惑吧，讓我們試一個簡單一些的詞
Constructive. “Con” means with, “struct” is build. So you are helping somebody to build

something.
在constructive這個詞里，con是一起的意思，struct是建造的意思。你在幫助一個人去建造
If I give constructive advice, I’m not saying “You need to stop doing that. Stop it.”
如果我有一個建設性的建議，我不會說你需要去停止做這件事
I would say, “You need to stop doing that, because this, and this is how.”
我會說你需要停止做這件事，因為如此，并且提供解決方法
I’m helping you make some changes to help build something better. Build better habits, build a

better ethic, anything really.
我在幫助你改變，從而去建設更好的事物。更好的習慣，道德，和任何事情
And then on the opposite side you have destructive. Something that breaks down, unbuild something.
反義詞是destructive，是毀滅，破壞的意思
You can destroy something by just being mean to it, you can destroy by breaking it, burning it,

knocking it down, killing, you are just unbuilding something.
你可以通過破壞，燃燒，打翻，殺死的方式去毀滅某物
If you are destructive with it if you destroy it.
如果你對其是有破壞性的，你會去摧毀它
Last word I want to show you that uses this root is “industry”
最后一個例子是industry這個詞
It has “str” in it. So we can guess that it’s either building a group of things or an arrangement of

things.
它有str，我們可以猜到它是關于建設或者整理一些物體
An industry is a group of people or companies that all make the same kind of product.
Industry(行業)是制造同一種產品的一群人或者公司
For example, you have the automobile industry which makes automobiles, or cars.
例如有汽車制造行業
And you have the clothing industry, the candy industry, list goes on.
也有紡織行業，糖果行業，等等
So remember, “str” or “struct” means to build or to arrange.
所以str或者struct的意思是建設和整理
