2. 表示放棄
abandon, desert, forsake, leave, give up這些動詞或詞組均含“拋棄、放棄”之意，但是用法稍微有區別。
abandon，強調永遠或完全放棄或拋棄人或事物等，這可能是被迫的，也可能是自愿的。
例：He finaly abandoned his reformist ideas.
他終于放棄了自己的改良主義思想。
desert，著重指違背法律責任和義務，或自己的信仰與誓言的行為，多含非難的意味。
例：To have illicit intercourse at the beginning and desert her at the end.
始亂終棄。
forsake，側重斷絕感情上的依戀，自愿拋棄所喜歡的人或物，也指拋棄信仰或改掉惡習。
例：She persuaded her husband to forsake his drinking habit.
她說服丈夫改掉嗜酒的習慣。

棄暗投明。
leave，普通用詞，指舍棄某事或某一職業，或終止同某人的關系，但不涉及動機與結果。
例：Leave it to chance!

give up，普通用語，側重指沒有希望或因外界壓力而放棄。
例：The glamour of the life of an actress make her give up her study.
女演員生活的誘惑使她放棄求學。
