Part One: Is Spelling a Talent?
第一部分：拼寫是一種才能嗎？
"Peter, please don't go," said Miss Martin. "I'd like to talk to you."
馬丁小姐說：“皮特，請(qǐng)不要走，我想和你談?wù)劇！?br />The other students went out of the classroom.
其他學(xué)生們都走出了教室。
Peter stood in front of the teacher's desk.
皮特站在老師桌子前面。
He felt sad. He knew what she was going to say.
他感到沮喪。 他知道她要說什么。
"Peter, you are not doing well in English," said Miss Martin.
馬丁小姐說：“皮特，你的英語不好，
"It is because of your spelling."
是你的拼寫。”
She looked at a piece of paper.
她看著一張紙。
It had red circles around many of the words.
上面有很多圈著單詞的紅圈。
"This is your story," said Miss Martin.
馬丁小姐說：“這是你寫的故事，
"It is a good story. But look!
這是一個(gè)很好的故事。但是看！
All these words are spelled wrong," said Miss Martin.
所有這些詞都拼寫錯(cuò)了。”
She put her finger on one circle.
她手指著一個(gè)圓圈。
"What is this word?" she asked.
她問：“這個(gè)詞是什么？”
Peter looked at the story.
皮特看著這個(gè)故事。
"It says 'bot.'It says, 'He bot bread at the bakery.'"
“它寫著‘bot’。它寫著‘他在面包店買了面包。’”
"But'bought' is not spelled B-O-T," said Miss Martin.
馬丁小姐說：“但是‘買’不是拼做B-O-T，
"It is spelled B-O-U-G-H-T.
它拼做B-O-U-G-H-T。
People read W-R-I-T-E.
人們讀W-R-I-T-E。
They know it is different from R-I-G-H-T."
他們知道它和R-I-G-H-T不同。”
"But I get both those words wrong," Peter said.
皮特說：“但是我把這些詞都寫錯(cuò)了，”
"You can get them right," said the teacher.
老師說：“你可以把它們改對(duì)，
"Work hard. You will improve. I'm confident of it."
好好努力。你會(huì)進(jìn)步的。我對(duì)你有信心?！?br />But Peter felt sad and scared.
但是皮特感到沮喪和害怕。
He did not have confidence in himself.
他對(duì)自己沒有信心。
Will Peter improve his spelling?
皮特會(huì)提高自己的拼寫嗎？
He doesn't think so. What will happen next?
他認(rèn)為不會(huì)。接下來會(huì)發(fā)生什么事？
