Lesson 2 Deep-sea Diving
深海潛水
Some people enjoy deep-sea diving as a sport.
有些深海潛水者出于愛好而喜歡這項運動。
But for most divers it is a way of reaching jobs that must be done under water.
但對于大多數潛水員來說，這是在水下工作的一種方式。
For Example.deep-sea divers locate sunken ships.

They help build under-water foundations for bridges and piers.

Sometimes,divers recover great treasures of gold and silver and other valuable cargoes from the holds of sunken ships.

A diver faces danger each time he goes under water.
每次下水，潛水員都要面對危險，
His life depends on a steady supply of air pumped to him through a hose from the surface.

He usually wears a bulky waterproof suit and a metal helmet that make it difficult to move about.
他通常穿著笨重的防水服，戴著金屬頭盔，活動不便。
Often a diver must grope his way through icy water filled with mud and silt that make it hard see.
潛水員常常要在充滿泥漿和淤泥，因而能見度極差的冰冷的水中摸索前行。
Swift currents may hurl him against an obstacle and strangle his air hose.
迅猛的水流可能會把他甩到障礙物上，纏繞傳輸空氣的軟管。
If a diver rises to the surface too rapidly, he may suffer from a sickness called the bends.
如果潛水員上升速度太快 ，還可能會得上減壓病。
