Sometimes there are things you have to expect in a certain situation or position and there's a phrase to describe this. Find out in this programme as Neil does some daydreaming and Feifei gives him a reality check!
有時特定的情況或狀況肯定會引發(fā)一些事情,有一個短語形容這種情況。尼爾在做白日夢,而菲菲讓他面對現(xiàn)實,請收聽本期節(jié)目了解這一短語。
Neil: Hello, I'm Neil...
尼爾:大家好,我是尼爾。
Feifei: ... and I'm Feifei and this is The English We Speak.
菲菲:我是菲菲,歡迎收聽地道英語節(jié)目。
Neil: Do you know someone asked me for an autograph the other day?
尼爾:你知道那天有人問我要簽名嗎?
Feifei: Your autograph!
菲菲:你的簽名!
Neil: Yes, they thought I was someone famous – which of course, I'm not.
尼爾:對,他們以為我是名人,當(dāng)然了,我并不是。
Feifei: Well you are sort of famous – being a presenter of The English We Speak.
菲菲:嗯,可以說你是名人,你是地道英語節(jié)目的主持人。
Neil: Oh yeah! Maybe I am. People want to take a selfie with me, buying me presents, me at the Oscars winning awards, fans everywhere, cameras flashing...
尼爾:哦,對!也許我是名人。人們想和我自拍,送我禮物,我獲得了奧斯卡獎,到處都是我的粉絲,照相機(jī)的閃光燈閃個不停……
Feifei: Neil, Neil wake up – I think he's daydreaming. Don't get carried away. You know if you were famous, you'd get lots of public attention – it comes with the territory.
菲菲:尼爾,尼爾,醒醒,我想他是在做白日夢。不要得意忘形。你知道,如果你很有名,那你是會得到很多公眾關(guān)注,這是理所當(dāng)然的。
Neil: You're right Feifei – the paparazzi would be following me everywhere – I wouldn't like that – but you used a good phrase there – it comes with the territory.
尼爾:你說得沒錯,菲菲,無論我去哪里,狗仔都會跟著我,我可不喜歡那樣,不過你剛才用了一個很不錯的短語,“理所當(dāng)然”。
Feifei: Yes. When something comes or goes with the territory it means it's something that is expected as part of the position or situation.
菲菲:對。某件事情“comes or goes with the territory”,意思是某件事是由某種情況所引起的。
Neil: Let's hear some examples....
尼爾:我們來聽幾個例句。
Examples
例句
The job involves a lot of travelling, but I guess that comes with the territory.
這份工作要經(jīng)常出差,不過我想這也是在所難免的。
If you're gonna play rugby, you're gonna get hurt – injuries go with the territory!
如果你要玩橄欖球,你就會受傷,受傷是在所難免的。
Feifei: So the expression it comes with the territory means something is to be expected as part of a certain situation. Let's face it Neil, perhaps it's a good thing that we're not famous.
菲菲:所以這個表達(dá)方式的意思是說,某件事的發(fā)生是由一個特定的情況所引起的。尼爾,我們面對現(xiàn)實吧,我們不是名人,這可能是件好事。
Neil: I guess so. I'll just carry on teaching English and making tea for everyone.
尼爾:我也這樣想。我會繼續(xù)教英語,也會繼續(xù)給大家泡茶。
Feifei: Well in our job, tea making comes with the territory.
菲菲:在我們的工作中,泡茶是在所難免的。
Neil: You're right – I think I'll go back to daydreaming. Bye.
尼爾:對,我想我要回去繼續(xù)做白日夢了。再見。
Feifei: Bye.
菲菲:再見。
