Cora: It's often said that America is a nation of immigrants. Yet North America had been inhabited before the colonists. What happened to these people?

Alvin: The fate of the aborigines was not a pleasant one.

Cora: How did that come about?
科拉：怎么會這樣？
Alvin: When the Europeans came to North America, they encountered some 100 peoples and tribes. These peoples ranged from hunter-gatherers to farmers, from chiefdoms to full-fledged nations. Later they were either wiped out by European epidemic, or defeated and driven off their land.
阿爾文：當歐洲人來到北美洲時，他們碰到了一百多個民族和部落。這些民族既有狩獵釆集者，也有農民，既有酉邦也有充分發展的國家。后來他們或者在歐洲人帶來的瘟疫中死去，或者戰敗被從本土驅逐出去。
Cora: Where do they live now?
科拉：那他們現在生活在什么地方？
Alvin: Now they have either integrated into mainstream American society, or live on reservations. Reservations are places allotted to the aborigines after the United States is established. But these reservations are often in poor condition.
阿爾文：現在他們或者融入了美國主流社會，或者住在保留區里。保留區是美國建立以后分配給土著人的地方，但是這些保留區通常都狀況堪憂。
Cora: Is their culture still preserved?
科拉：那他們的文化還保留著嗎？
Alvin: Native American culture also varies in different tribes. And some tribes have survived as intact communities.
阿爾文：不同的原住民部落文化也不同，其中有一些部落作為完整的社區存活了下來。
